Rooney key for England

Hurst: Rooney key for England

Sir Geoff Hurst believes Wayne Rooney is “the one player that England cannot afford to be without” if they are to have a realistic chance of winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ this summer.

England’s hat-trick hero of 1966 feels Rooney has been at the peak of his powers this season, but the former West Ham star warned it is of paramount importance to keep the Manchester United star fit for the duration of the tournament.

“Rooney is the one player that England cannot afford to be without,” Hurst told Press Association Sport. “Wayne, with the season he has had for Manchester United and England, needs to be playing. That would certainly be the case for the latter part of the tournament. You could get away with it in the early rounds, maybe, but to win it, you need your best players for the latter stages.

“He gives you that x-factor. He is one of the top players in the world now. He is at his peak and that is hard to replace. You can’t replace great players playing at their best. It is impossible,” he added.

Hurst also backed Rooney to lead the line on his own if necessary. “I think there is a strong case for playing Rooney up front on his own like he does for United,” he said. “I am not sure whether he could have done that a couple of years ago but he has proved he can do it and score goals.”

Blunder leaves Crouch with two left feet‎

May 8, 2010

The Sun reports that the Tottenham striker was caught out after his girlfriend Abbey Clancy packed his bag for last month’s friendly against Egypt with two left shoes.

The 29-year-old realised his girlfriend’s mistake just before he boarded the team bus headed for Wembley and was forced to ask aides to rummage through lost property bins in the hope of finding a pair of matching size 12s.

Fortunately for the 6’7″ goal ace, they came up trumps and he was able to comply with England coach Fabio Capello’s strict smart dress code for the trip.

A source told The Sun: “Peter was pleased when Abbey offered to give him a hand. She’s very thoughtful, so she said she would take care of packing his outfit to travel to the stadium in.

“He didn’t think much more of it until he tried to slip his shoes on – and noticed a problem. Abbey had packed him two left shoes. He rang down to reception to see if they had anything suitable for him to wear from their lost property department.

“Finding size 12s is a tall order, but surprisingly they did manage to find him a pair. So Peter managed to look as smart as his team-mates for the big match.”

Crouch was on target twice against the Egyptians as England ran out 3-1 winners as part of their preparations for the summer’s World Cup in South Africa. The World Cup 2010 tickets of all matches are now available for sale.

The competition

April 14, 2010

England’s penultimate friendly before the FIFA World Cup™, against Mexico at Wembley, will be played on Monday, May 24 at 8pm.

Fabio Capello had hoped FIFA would relax their rule on when warm-up games could be played to allow the match to take place 24 hours earlier.

However, the FA have now confirmed a Monday fixture for England’s last home game before departure for South Africa.

The game has been arranged to provide England with some opposition from the CONCACAF region ahead of their opening Group C encounter with USA in Rustenburg on 12 June.

And, following last night’s result at Stamford Bridge, Capello could have all his Chelsea contingent available.

England are due to depart for the first of two training camps in Austria on 17 May, but any players involved in the UEFA Champions League final will not join up for at least another week.

That showpiece in Madrid will not now involve John Terry, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole or Ashley Cole following Chelsea’s demise at the hands of Inter Milan.

They could still be involved in the FA Cup Final on 15 May, although Capello would still have them available for the bulk of his Austrian get-together.

Chelsea suffer Branislav Ivanovic injury blow

April 2, 2010

The 26-year-old has torn his medial knee ligament and was replaced by Yuri Zhirkov during the game at Ewood Park.

The injury to the Serb will be a blow to Carlo Ancelotti’s Premier League title contenders, who are four points behind leaders Manchester United.

Ivanovic will now miss the crucial game against United on 3 April.

Chelsea have one game in hand on the Premier League champions, which comes against Portsmouth on Wednesday evening.

But Ivanovic’s injury adds further worry to a defence that is already without long-term absentee Jose Bosingwa and Ashley Cole, who is battling to be fit before the end of the season.

The Blues have only eight Premier League games left and Ivanovic is now likely to miss five of them in addition to the FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa on 10 April.

Ancelotti will be desperate to win some silverware in his first season at Stamford Bridge after crashing out of the Champions League to Inter Milan last week.

Yet with only Paulo Ferreira, Juliano Belletti and Zhirkov left as recognised full-backs, Chelsea’s defensive cover is now looking thin.

Sad for Beckham – but not England

March 18, 2010

The debate about David Beckham’s place in England’s World Cup squad is over. The question now is whether he will ever grace the highest level again.

As someone who consistently stated he should have no place in Fabio Capello’s plans for South Africa, it would be hypocrisy on a grand scale to join the mourning that greets his absence after the serious Achilles tendon injury sustained playing for Milan against Chievo.

This, however, is the professional context. The personal part of this story dictates there must be sadness and sympathy for a consummate professional who had set his heart on becoming the first player to represent England at four World Cups.

Beckham will be understandably devastated as he flies to Finland on Monday for surgery on the injury every player dreads. It can strike at any time, often without an opposing player in the vicinity, as befell Beckham on Sunday, and can have career-threatening consequences.

And the biggest heartbreak of all will be the knowledge that he is unlikely to add to his 115 England caps. The dream conclusion to his career, holding the World Cup on 11 July in Johannesburg’s Soccer City, will remain exactly that.

Beckham has shown remarkable powers of endurance before, rebuilding his England career after being exiled almost as a cosmetic exercise by then coach Steve McClaren following his resignation from the captaincy in tears in Baden-Baden after the World Cup exit in 2006.

This injury means there will be no more England comebacks.

Apollon

March 10, 2010

In 1965 Apollon reached the Cup Final. A year later, Apollon was in the Final again, won the Cup, and triumphantly took the trophy back to Limassol. Apollon managed to maintain its Cup title in 1967. After celebrating these titles, Apollon had to wait another 15 years to start making history once again. In 1982 Apollon reached the Cup Final once again, and that marked the beginning of a new era. In the last 15 years Apollon won the league title three times (1991, 1994, 2006), and was the runner-up four times (1984, 1989, 1993, 1996). Since then Apollon won the Cup another 5 times (1966, 1967, 1986, 1992, 2001), and was the Cup finalist four times (1987, 1993, 1995, 1998). In the season, 2005-06 Apollon won the league title undefeated and earned a club record of 64 points. Apollon had 19 wins and 7 draws in 26 matches and this went down in Cypriot Football history due to fact that it was the fourth team in the Cyprus Championship that won the title unbeaten.

Bridge turns his back on England

March 9, 2010

Manchester City left-back Wayne Bridge has said he does not want to be considered for selection by England.

The news means that Fabio Capello will not be able to include the former Southampton and Chelsea defender in his squad for this summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa.

Bridge has made his decision after a relationship between his former partner Vanessa Perroncel and Chelsea and England defender John Terry became public knowledge.

Although Capello stripped Terry of the England captaincy, Bridge has said his place in the squad has become “untenable and potentially divisive”.

It is a major blow for England as first-choice left-back Ashley Cole is currently injured and Bridge was expected to replace him in next Wednesday’s friendly international against Egypt.

The 29-year-old issued a statement which read: “It has always been an honour to play for England.

“However, after careful thought, I believe my position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive.

“I have thought long and hard about my position in the England football team in the light of the reporting and events over the last few weeks.

“It has always been an honour to play for England. However, after careful thought I believe my position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive.

“Sadly therefore I feel for the sake of the team and in order to avoid what will be inevitable distractions, I have decided not to put myself forward for selection.

“I have today informed the management of this decision. I wish the team all the very best in South Africa.”
